Character Name: Mercy Moritz
Age: 16
Suitability: N/A
Canon: Synblade.
Canon Point: One week prior to the Seven Sisters tournament for that year.
World Information: Fortunately, some very sweet and helpful person wrote up an info post for the Synblade 'verse.
History: Mercy was born as the third and youngest daughter of the Moritz family. Her oldest sister, Charity, was a highly skilled and promising Synchronic who had recently graduated Estrella Academy. By all accounts, they seemed like a normal, happy family until their newest daughter started to show signs of being... odd.
Mercy came into her powers as a Synchronic at the very young age of two and a half, and proved to be even stronger than her sister. She could heal any ailment with a touch, able to instantly detect any biological problem and cure herself and others of any affliction. Ordinarily, this would have been cause for great celebration, but something about her was deeply unsettling.
She was obsessively fascinated with the inner workings of living creatures, proving to be a true scientific prodigy as her research into biology rapidly grew more and more advanced. However, she seemed to have no real understanding of human viewpoints, frequently terrifying or disgusting others with her gleeful appreciation for gory details and extreme, morally-questionable experiments.
Her parents simply waved away any concerns and insisted there was no problem, but it became more and more clear to everyone around them that eventually there was going to be a serious problem.
They were right. And very, very wrong.
The truth is that the Moritz family hadn't been a happy one for years.
Charity Moritz had been seen as a quick and easy way to get rich ever since her powers manifested, and her parents had pushed her relentlessly to be the best, never allowed her to rest or relax, determined to make her famous and powerful for their own benefit. Between this treatment and Estrella Academy's own darker secrets, her mental health had been deteriorating for years. Prudence Moritz, the middle sister, had almost the opposite problem, bitterly resenting her older sister for having all their parents' attention when she herself was almost completely ignored due to her lack of any Synchronic abilities to speak of.
And then, into all this mess, Mercy was born. A newer, younger, even more powerful Synchronic child. Charity tried to shield her from her parents' greed and Prudence's resentment as best she could- and largely succeeded, due to Mercy's own sheer social obliviousness than anything else- but eventually realized that she simply didn't have the ability to protect her forever.
She resorted to drastic measures.
At eight years old, in the middle of the night, Mercy was woken up by a strange noise from downstairs. She walked into the parlor to find both her parents and Prudence dead. Charity fled the scene without stopping to explain, and the police arrived several minutes later after a neighbor called in to report suspicious sounds coming from the Moritz residence.
Officially, the exact circumstances of the Moritz family murders were kept quiet in order to protect Mercy from "unwanted public attention", in order to preserve her mental health, as well as to avoid causing unnecessary panic from revealing that a powerful Synchronic had murdered three people and avoided capture. In truth, Estrella Academy discreetly intervened, using their power to suppress the details of the story in order to prevent anyone from realizing their own part in Charity's downward spiral.
The known facts, to the general public, were this: by all accounts, the Moritz family was a happy, normal one until Mercy's birth. They were killed, save her, and their killer never officially identified. Afterwards, Mercy Moritz was hastily given over to the care of a social worker and has never openly discussed the incident.
For a strange, suspicious child, always never quite normal, never quite right, never quite able to understand people... well.
It didn't exactly paint her in the best light.
The rumors of terrible crimes kept most people from approaching her, and her own highly unsettling personality generally frightened away the rest. Mercy grew into her teenage years brilliant, self-sufficient, and almost entirely alone. Estrella Academy kept track of her via carefully-chosen social workers and other professionals, not wanting to leave a promising young talent unaccounted for, but did little beyond ensuring her physical health and safety.
When she finally entered Estrella Academy, she didn't expect things to be any different. Instead, she ended up learning the truth about her sister, helping to uncover a twisted conspiracy, and actually making friends.
The first two she's come to terms with, but the third is still pretty confusing.
Personality: Mercy is every cliche mad scientist in the form of an adorable teenage girl. She is absolutely, utterly fascinated by all aspects of biological science and medicine, especially the most gory and disturbing ones. She calls "dibs" every time she sees a dead animal on the sidewalk. She has been investigated by the CDC multiple times for potential global health risks.
She's genuinely just happy to be here.
Fundamentally, Mercy isn't actually a cruel or malicious person. She simply has no understanding of how other people work, and approaches things from her own blatantly strange perspective. To her, all living and/or wonderfully, messily dead things are beautiful and intriguing, and she doesn't get at all why everyone else isn't having fun.
Since she's had her powers for almost her entire life, she has no real memory of what it's like to not be able to will away any physical pain or injury on a whim, and therefore has no real understanding of why other people get scared when she starts enthusiastically discussing vivisections.
She's not great with morals, and she definitely isn't going to understand social mores any time soon, but she does genuinely like the few people she's close to. She cares strongly about her friends and wants them to be happy, and is more than willing to try and follow "normal people rules" when they're clearly explained to her... albeit with occasionally mixed results.
Ultimately, all she really wants is to make the people she loves happy, and do the work she loves, that makes her happy. It might take some doing, but it shouldn't be too hard to have both, right?
Sin: Greed- Mercy wants knowledge, understanding, new and interesting things to experiment with, and she is constantly seeking them out. It doesn't matter how dangerous or unhinged something she's doing in the name of science is, she has to know and just can't resist. It doesn't matter how much she's already discovered and achieved, she will never be satisfied and needs more, more, more. This is the driving force behind almost everything she does on a daily basis, and she frequently upset and disturbs those around her in the course of her obsession.
Pride- Being a child prodigy and highly powerful Synchronic, Mercy has rarely had to come to terms with the idea that she doesn't know best in her chosen field. While she's definitely figured out that her judgement is very poor outside of medicine, the possibility that she might not be one-hundred percent correct and justified in doing something within that field has just straight-up never occurred to her. She doesn't worry about safety risks because she knows she's good enough to handle them, so it'll be fine. She doesn't worry about her discoveries potentially uncovering knowledge too dangerous to give to the general public, because it's science, why would it ever be a problem?
Basically, she's every mad scientist who said "don't be silly, creating a genetically engineered superweapon can't possibly have any negative consequences, just think of all the wonderful progress we'll make" at the beginning of a sci-fi horror B-movie.
Lust- I'm going to be totally honest, this is just the exact same justification as greed and I actually do think it fits this sin better, it would probably be the most accurate choice. Literally the only reason I didn't list it first was because the idea of going with lust for the cute and cheery teenage anime schoolgirl made me Deeply Uncomfortable. I KNOW IT'S NOT INHERENTLY HORNY BUT IT FEELS WEIRD, OKAY.
Executor Title: Medic
Memoria:
1. First Memorial: Art Of Medicine. Contains all of Mercy's medical training and knowledge of the human body- how to fix it, how to break it, how to put it back together again. Regaining this fragment renders her once again a fully qualified medical doctor, instead of just working off of the vague instinctual knowledge she had before.
2. Second Memorial: Charity Begins At Home. Contains the memory of her older sister Charity gently explaining to her that while managing to surgically swap her eyes with the eyes of their family cat was very impressive, she's upset the poor kitty and needs to put them back now. Regaining this memory returns Mercy's knowledge that she had a beloved older sister, but all memories of her cut off abruptly at a young age, coupled with a feeling of unease.
3. Third Memorial: A Stitch In Time. Contains the memory of brutally killing a giant monstrous animal called a Cast-Off by using her partnered Key, a giant pair of surgical scissors named Stitches. Regaining this fragment returns both the memory of their friendship together and the training she received in properly using such an unusual weapon.
4. Fourth Memorial: Rumor Has It. Contains the memory of her first day at Estrella Academy, sitting by herself in an empty classroom reading a textbook during lunch and overhearing two students standing out in the hallway discussing the rumor that she was responsible for the deaths of her own family.
5. Fifth Memorial: Epic Rap Battles Of Estrella Academy. Contains the memory of having a rap battle against a belligerent upperclassman in the Estrella science hall's second floor student restrooms, and winning. Regaining this fragment returns Mercy's surprising ability to wreck shit in a rap battle.
6. Sixth Memorial: A Friend Indeed. Contains the memory of Erina Estival pounding on the door of her dorm room at two in the morning, asking to use her bunsen burner in order to boil a brightly-colored sports drink. Said drink is usually consumed chilled. Regaining this fragment returns Mercy's memory of her friendship with Erina, as well as knowledge of a shockingly large amount of dank memes acquired from said friendship.
7. Seventh Memorial: Oh My God, They Were Roommates. Contains the memory of Ganbaatar Sarangeral sitting in the bleachers of the Seven Sisters tournament, holding up a sign helpfully reminding Mercy that live dissection of opponents is frowned upon. Her opponent for this round looks deeply disturbed. Regaining this fragment returns Mercy's memory of her friendship with Sara.
8. Eighth Memorial: Memento Moritz. Contains the memory of her death. (Note: while she survived in the Synblade "canon", this version is a slight AU who didn't. This is solely due to the nature of Can Cry as a game, and her timeline is otherwise completely identical to Synblade canon up to this point.) In the memory, she's working in her lab as usual when an Estrella Academy security team breaks down the door, informs her that she's been accused of crimes against humanity, and needs to be "apprehended for the safety of innocent people". Said apprehension seems to have been deliberately fatal.
9. Ninth Memorial: Know Thyself. Contains the memory of an early childhood school day, sitting in class hearing the teacher explain the difference between Synchronics and ordinary humans. Regaining this memory returns Mercy's knowledge that she herself was a Synchronic with healing abilities.
10. Tenth Memorial: Velveteen. Contains the memory of catching a well-loved plushie shaped like a black cat before it can topple off her desk and hit the floor. Regaining this memory returns her ability to sew and create fibercrafts projects for recreational and artistic purposes, not just stitching wounds.
11. Eleventh Memorial: A House Divided. Contains the memory of sitting on the couch in someone else's dorm common room, eating a bowl of cereal and watching Erina have a screaming match with a younger-looking red-headed girl. An amused-looking upperclasswoman is trying to mediate the argument while a third girl wearing a student council badge is chiding them for making too much noise. An older boy is sitting next to Mercy on the couch, looking resigned. Regaining this memory returns her knowledge of her friendships with Jessica Gin, Jasvinder Kapali, Hilda Roth, and Zuri Tamirat, as well as the many, many times she and the rest of the terrible disaster kohai flock invaded Jess and Jas' dorm for their daily nonsense.
12. Twelfth Memorial: Those Who Can't Do, Teach. Contains the memory of helping Jess to secretly break into a restricted area of Estrella Academy and finding files containing some deeply disturbing implications of student "disappearances". Regaining this memory returns her knowledge of the conspiracy behind Estrella Academy and the secret of their Keys.
13. Thirteenth Memorial: Sister's Keeper. Contains the memory of confronting Charity Moritz after encountering her in the wastelands on a Cast-Off hunting mission with her fellow students. During the memory, Charity confirms she killed the rest of their family due to fears that they would exploit Mercy's powers the same way they abusively exploited hers, and eventually surrenders to the students, willingly turning herself in to the law for her crimes.
14. Fourteenth Memorial: Have Mercy. Contains the memory of her name, Mercy Moritz.
